Newton, CMB, PCM, Colfax-Mingo win district games

All five area high school football teams opened district play Friday night. Here’s the roundup of Week 3 area football action.

Newton 21, Grinnell 14

GRINNELL — Newton High’s Cardinals escaped a surging Grinnell Tiger team, 21-14, in Class 3A District 6 play Friday at Grinnell.

The Cardinals pushed to a 14-0 lead by halftime and built it to 21-0 after three quarters. The 0-2 Tigers roared back into the contest with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Not until Newton’s Bryce Tish knocked away the football on a long pass on fourth down for the Tigers with 38 seconds left in the game could the Cardinals celebrate. The Cardinals took possession of the football and ran out the clock.

“To get the win in our district opener is awesome,” said Duncan Lee, who had two quarterback sacks for the Newton defense. “District is what counts so we have to keep winning. We lost some intensity in the second half. They (Grinnell) didn’t, but we stopped them when we needed to in the fourth quarter.”

Tyler Wood threw touchdown passes of 29 yards to Joseph Banfield in the first quarter and 17 yards to Nick Easley in the third quarter. At the end of the first quarter, Wood scored a rushing touchdown from five yards out.

Newton head coach Ed Ergenbright knew never to count out a Tony Farmer-coached Grinnell team.

“They are well-coached and I knew they’d be hard to handle. We gave up the two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the guys got the job done late. We have a district win on the road against good team,” Ergenbright said.

Brett Wolf led the Newton defense with nine solo tackles and one assisted tackle and a quarterback sack. Wood recorded five solo stops and two assisted tackles. The Cardinal defense recovered two Tiger fumbles, one by Easley in the first half and one by Mason Bowes in the third quarter.

Newton improved to 3-0 on the season. The Cardinals take host Benton Community in district play Friday at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

The NHS freshman are also 3-0 with a 28-12 win at Grinnell.

Colfax-Mingo 45, Lynnville-Sully 16

SULLY — The Tigerhawks won their first district game in three seasons Friday night and did so in convincing fashion.

Colfax-Mingo turned three Lynnville-Sully first-half turnovers into three touchdowns and built a 28-8 advantage by halftime.

Tigerhawk junior Blake Summy caught two scores, including an 82-yarder in the second quarter, and junior quarterback Jared Myers found the end zone twice with his legs.

Summy also recorded his third interception of the year in the win.

Lynnville-Sully sophomore Caden Dunsbergen accounted for both of the Hawks' touchdowns.

The victory pushed Colfax-Mingo to 3-0, surpassing the team's win total from each of the past two years.

"It feels fantastic," Colfax-Mingo's Jimmy Camp said of the team's 3-0 start. "It's amazing."

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter 40, Davis County 12

BLOOMFIELD — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter continued its strong scoring output thanks in part to solid nights from receiver Bryce Kemp and running back Blake Coughenour.

Kemp totaled five catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. He also returned an interception for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Coughenour carried the ball 22 times for 122 yards and a touchdown.

CMB kicker Joey Nissen added four field goals, including one from 42 yards out in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders (3-0) doubled Davis County in total offense (389 yards to 179) and held the Mustangs to only 10 yards rushing on 27 attempts.

Prairie City-Monroe 48, Centerville 19

MONROE — Prairie City-Monroe erased a 13-7 first-half deficit en route to earning its first win of the season Friday night.

The Mustangs led 35-13 at halftime thanks to two rushing touchdowns from Ronnie Marshall and two passing scores from Logan Gilman. Senior Hayes Applegate added an interception return for a touchdown late in the second quarter to cap the scoring before the break.
