Newton Police Department

• Travis W. Nichol, 24, of Des Moines was charged with possession of methamphetamine (more than five grams) with intent to deliver, failure to affix a drug tax stamp, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, and Alyssa M. Bright, 23, of Newton was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities responded to a complaint of suspicious activity at 5:09 a.m. Tuesday at the Super 8 motel. Police were granted entry into Bright’s room and could smell marijuana. Bright eventually showed authorities marijuana in a nightstand, a glass methamphetamine pipe on the bed and a syringe from her purse. While speaking with Bright, Nichol came to the door. Nichol was arrested on a warrant, and police found a baggie of meth when searching him. He asked to say goodbye to his girlfriend in another room. Police could smell marijuana when arriving at the other room and found a baggie of marijuana, another baggie of meth, a digital scale and a meth pipe with burnt residue. The total amount of meth found was 11.6 grams. Nichol admitted the items were his. Both Nichol and Bright were transported to the Jasper County Jail.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
