Baseball, reading programs at library

How Iowa Met Baseball:

The Myths, The History,

The Players

Noted historian and baseball expert John Liepa will present “How Iowa Met Baseball: The Myths, The History, The Players” on Monday in the library meeting room.

Starting at 5 p.m., everyone is invited to view baseball memorabilia from Liepa’s extensive collection. This includes baseball cards! At 6 p.m., he will begin talking about the invention and origins of baseball, and the first players of baseball in Iowa, with a focus on those from Jasper County and Central Iowa. The program is family friendly, with all ages are welcome.

Summer Reading Programs

We have Summer Reading Programs for adults, teens and children. You can register for any program up until the end of July.

If you have questions regarding the teen and children's programs, contact Phyllis Peter at (641) 792-408. If you have questions regarding the adult program, contact Nicole Lindstrom at (641) 792-4108. You can find information for all programs at www.newton.lib.ia.us or at the children's desk and information desk.

Dan Wardell Visit

Dan Wardell, Iowa Public Television kid’s host, is taking his Reading Road Trip around the state of Iowa, and one of his first stops is the Newton Public Library on Tuesday!

Dan will entertain kids with stories at 9:30 a.m. and repeat the program at 10:30 a.m. This program will be held outside on the library lawn, so bring a blanket to sit on. If it is raining, the program will take place in the library meeting room. Kids can wear a super hero cape like Dan, and bring your camera if you would like to take a pic with Dan after the program!

Make a Lawn Leaf/Hypertufas

We have two opportunities this summer to make lawn leaves out of cement. These leaves can be made in bird baths, stepping stones or just a beautiful decoration for your garden. One event will be at the Centre for Arts & Artists on Wednesday and Thursday. The other event will be at the library on June 25 and 26.

To register for either, call the library at (641) 792-4108 and ask for Nicole Lindstrom, public services librarian. You can see the collection of photos from our last lawn leaf class on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/NewtonPublicLibraryIowa.

Renew Items Online

Starting on Tuesday, you will be able to renew items online. Check our Facebook page for more details and our website www.newton.lib.ia.us.

Library Card Reminder

Make sure your library card and your children’s library cards are up to date for the summer reading program! You can do this by stopping in with your card at the circulation desk. It only takes a minute!  This will guarantee that your child will be able to check-out this summer, and you will too!
