Semi catches fire near the I-80 164 exit

A semi tractor trailer caught fire late Tuesday morning on the Interstate 80 eastbound entrance ramp at Highway 14.

According to the Newton Fire Department, the vehicle experienced mechanical failure which resulted in the fire near the rear axles of the tractor. Fire crews responded to the scene with and extinguished the flames. No injuries have been reported in the incident and the vehicle was sustained enough damage from the fire that it was no longer able to operate.

Newton fire crews were on scene for approximately 30 minutes.
