• Jackson A. Castonguay, 19, of Johnston, was charged with possession of alcohol underage, possession of a controlled substance and carrying weapons at 2:34 a.m. Feb. 1 in the 800 block of First Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were on active patrol when they noticed a vehicle with no front plate. They turned around to see if the vehicle had an Iowa plate, officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with Castonguay. They got the scent of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Officers searched every person in the car, including the driver, and a bag was found on Castonguay he said was marijuana. Officers also searched the vehicle and found a Ruger pistol underneath the drivers seat, a bottle of alcohol in the passenger seat and Castonguay stated that everything in the car was his. Castonguay was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Andrew J. Smith, 30, of Newton was charged with consumption in public places at at 12:15 a.m. Feb. 3 in the 200 block of East Seventh Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were dispatched in regards to an intoxicated male walking. Officers located the male and identified him as Smith. Smith was unstable on his feet, had red, watery bloodshot eyes and slurred speech and also had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. Smith stated he had gotten drunk at a Super Bowl party. Smith also had a warrant for failure to appear on a previous charge of public intoxication. Smith was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
