Newton High’s freshmen improved to 6-1 on the season with their 27-8 win over Pella Friday. The Cardinals scored just before halftime to take a 7-0 lead. They added two touchdowns in the third quarter and one more in the fourth, building a 27-0 advantage,
Carson Cazett had a 43-yard touchdown run, and Clayton Baltisberger had a run to the end zone from eight yards out. Jace Lukefar caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Sturtz and Josh Miravalles hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass.
Sturtz was 4-of-5 passing for 63 yards. Zach Combs had a 13-yard catch and Cazett had an 8-yard reception to go along with 50 rushing yards. Miravalles had seven carries for 78 yards.
Leading the Cardinal defense were Miravalles with six tackles, Lukefahr with five tackles, Alex Morris with four tackles and Cazett with three tackles and a fumble recovery.
Newton hosts Bondurant-Farrar Friday.
