Hawk harries run at Grinnell

GRINNELL — Lynnville-Sully’s girls ran seventh at the rescheduled Grinnell Invitational Thursday, while the Hawk boys placed ninth. The meet was postponed Tuesday by severe weather.

“Cooler temperatures and a flatter course helped lead to many season-best times for our runners Thursday,” said Darin Arkema, Lynnville-Sully head coach. “We had to wait a few extra days to compete because of the postponement from Tuesday, but the kids seemed to be ready and competed well.”

Canyon Kuhlmann led the Lynnville-Sully boys, turning in the top performance of the day for the Hawks. Kuhlmann placed 15th running the 5K race in 17 minutres, 55 seconds. Lucas Jones placed 56th in 20:26 followed by Jake Brand in 48th at 20:35.

Connor Fraker finished 63rd and Nic Lirio was 64th in 21:37 and 21:53, respectively. Jared Bassett placed 67th in 23:06.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls were led by Cori Rice, who placed 31st in the 4K race in 18:05. Madison Rasmusson ran the course in 18:40 for 39th. Haley James took 50th in 19:42 followed by Kasiah Ehresman in 58th in 20:09, Kristine Jaennette in 59th at 20:24 and Alexis Hardenbrook in 60th at 20:27.

Grinnell won both the girls’ and boys’ team titles. Lynnville-Sully’s girls scored 237 points, while Grinnell won with 52 points. Grinnell’s boys scored 51 points for first and Lynnville-Sully had 256 points for ninth.

“Some of our runners wondered how they ran their best time of the season, but their place wasn’t better, and that has to do with the level of competition we were racing against tonight,” Arkema said. “Nearly all of the schools were 3A and many of them ranked in that class. I told them that if they keep working and racing tough, they’ll like the results once we get into some meets with more schools our size. We get that opportunity coming up on Monday at Ballard-Huxley and then next Thursday at our home meet.”

In the junior varsity girls’ race, Rebecca Morningstar placed 73rd in 22:33 and Haley Breeden was 74th in 22:33. Lynnville-Sully’s Kordell Mueller (26:57), Brett Maasdam (27:52) and Lucas Smith (28:16) finished 135th, 137th and 138th in the junior varsity boys’ race.

Running in the middle school division for Lynnville-Sully, Kennedy Roland was 32nd for the girls, running 1.25 miles in 9:01. Also running 1.25 miles, Jason Craver and Mason Dunsbergen were 337th and 39th in the boys’ race in 8:56 and 9:08.
