NCMP decks Dowling, Roosevelt in home waters

Riding a wave of emotion, NCMP’s Aquagirls powered past rival West Des Moines Dowling Catholic and Des Moines Roosevelt in a double dual swim meet. In their only regular home meet of the season, the Aquagirls swept the varsity and junior varsity competitions.

“It’s so exciting and a joy because we’ve worked so hard,” said Sara Martin, one of 10 seniors on the swim team. “It is so much fun to be on the team with all these girls. It is amazing to see what we can do together.”

The varsity Aquagirls put on a show for their fans in defeating both opponents in convincing fashion. Against Dowling — the only team to beat NCMP in a dual meet last year — NCMP posted a 105-65 win. NCMP beat Roosevelt, 117-53. Dowling pulled away to defeat Roosevelt, 94-76.

Three team records were set in the Newton YMCA pool, which is measured in meters. Junior Samantha Hedrick had the top times in the varsity 100-meter freestyle race and the 200-meter freestyle race. Hedrick lowered her own team mark in the 100 freestyle from 1 minute, 00.31 seconds to 1:00.08.

Hedrick broke the 200 freestyle mark by almost four seconds. Carly Colville held the record at 2:15.11 and Hedrick recorded a 2:11.57 Thursday. Both records had been established in 2012.

“I was pretty nervous tonight because of the competition we had coming in here,” Hedrick said. “I just said to myself ‘I can do this.’ Once I got in the pool, I couldn’t back down. All of us as a team work hard and support each other.”

Hedrick had a part in the other school record, which came in the final event of the night — the 400-meter freestyle relay. Hedrick, senior Rachel Prendergast and junior Sydney Jenkins combined with C. Colville to set the relay record in 2012 at 4:12.73. Hedrick, Jenkins, Prendergast and senior Hannah Scotton shaved a second off the NCMP record, winning Thursday’s race in 4:11.58.

“What a great meet. It was fun,” said Sarah Patterson, NCMP head coach. “We dedicated this meet to our seniors, who have been amazing leaders this season. Our girls stepped up and were aggressive in the pool on every race we swam tonight.”

Patterson, who arrived late (5:29) to the meet because her son had knee surgery Thursday, said she was overwhelmed with emotion. She said she came in as the NCMP swimmers were leading the singing of the National Anthem.

“Kudos to coach Chris Forsyth, our managers Austin Bunker and Madison Humphrey and all the parents who helped get things ready for the meet,” Patterson said. “This was a big meet for our team because it is our only home meet, except for conference at the end of the season. And it was against Dowling, the only team that beat us last year and we really wanted to win this one.”

Patterson said the Aquagirls did not back down from Dowling, a team they hadn’t beaten in dual action since 2002, or Roosevelt swimmers at the varsity or junior variety level. She said she saw a lot of positive things happening in the pool, “but we sill need to work on the back half of our races. There’s always room for improvement.”

The only time the meet was close was, 10-4, at the finish of the first event. NCMP’s 200 medley relay team of Jenkins, junior Hannah Rhoads, Scotton and freshman Alexis Stout won the race in 2:09.45. The second team of senior Kira Hanson, junior Sierra Griffith, Martin and sophomore Emily Miller turned in a third-place finish in 2:13.85.

Hedrick won the 200 freestyle setting off a wave of points the rest of the way for NCMP. Scotton claimed first place in the 50 freestyle in 28.78 seconds then won the 100 butterfly in 1:06.52. Hedrick was first in the 100 freestyle.

In the 200-meter freestyle relay race, the Aquagirls finished 1-2 led by the foursome of Martin, Prendergast, Rhoads and Hedrick. Second place went to the team of freshman Madeline Webb, junior Kaelee Knoll, Miller and Stout in 2:00.05, out touching Roosevelt’s team, 2:00.58.

Rhoads recorded a first against Roosevelt and a second against Dowling in the 200-meter individual medley with a 2:39.51. Dowling’s Hannah Williamson won the overall race in 2:34.57. Rhoads placed first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.63 against Dowling, but was second to Roosevelt’s Natalie Galluzzo, 1:21.32.

NCMP’s Myers was first against Roosevelt and second against Dowling in the 400 freestyle with a time of 5:10.89. The race was won by Dowling’s Megan Siembieda in 4:52.48. In the 100 backstroke, Jenkins defeated Roosevelt’s Claire Michaelson and was second to Dowling’s Ann Mari Westercamp. Jenkins got to the wall just ahead of Dowling’s Juliette Sanders in the race, 1:13.10 and 1:13.23, respectively.

The Aquagirls’ junior varsity dominated its races also. It beat Roosevelt, 109-35, and Dowling, 90-64. Dowling’s junior varsity defeated Roosevelt, 99-47.

For the NCMP junior varsity, sophomore Willa Colville won the 200 individual medley, Knoll led a 1-2-4 finish in the 50 freestyle followed by Hannah Boecker and Sarah Urias, Sarah Prendergast won the 100 butterfly race, and Colville, Alexis DeVries and Taylor Tremmel finished 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle

The junior varsity 200-meter medley relay team of Katherine Thorpe, DeVries, Abby Jolivette and Jessica Zahn took first. Tremmel, Zahn Urias and Brianna Fuller was first in the 200 freestyle relay race and the 400 freestyle relay team of Tremmel, Boecker, Zahn and Jolivette turned in a first-place finish.

NCMP competes in Saturday’s Ames Invitational and goes to Southeast Polk Tuesday.
