Three drivers repeat as winners at Marshalltown Speedway

Two drivers earned their first win of the season Friday night at Marshalltown while three others returned to the winner’s circle. Racing action was exciting and intense all night long on J&V Napa Auto Parts Night at the Races.

Mike Rupe won the first race of the night, the Flattrack Quads, after taking the lead from Travis Brandt on the final lap. Brandt finished second, Jordan Brown third, Mark Johnson fourth and Brandon Gillette fifth. Quads were invited back Aug. 29.

The Mod Lites were out next in a 15-lap feature event. Travis Stensland started on the outside front row and led every lap en route to recording his first win at Marshalltown. Behind Stensland, drivers battled two and three wide at times. Terry Brown took the runner-up honors while his brother, Charlie Brown, ended upside down in Turn Four coming to the checkered flag. Tim Hennigar, Mike Morrill and Jimmy May placed third through fifth.

Several lead changes in the 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature resulted in Austin Luellen grabbing his seventh win in Motown in 2014. Eric Stanton finished second, Tyler Pickett third, Kyle Parizek fourth and Brice Udelhoven fifth.

Lapped traffic played a role in determining the winner of the Big Eight Tyre Center IMCA Northern SportMods 18-lap feature. After Jenae Gustin and Logan Scott maneuvered around slower cars and traded the lead in the race’s final laps, Gustin pulled away to win her third in a row and fifth of the season at Motown. Sam Wieben worked his way up to finish second. Keagan Scott placed third, Clint Luellen fourth and Brett Lowry fifth.

A blown motor and spilled oil helped Donovan Smith win the 18-lap IMCA Stock Cars feature. Jeff Wollam appeared to have a victory secured until Don Vis’ motor failed, dumping oil on the track. Smith saw that and went to the high side to take the lead with two laps to go. Smith claimed the win over Wollam, Trent Murphy, Robert Stofer and Jay Schmidt.

The final feature of the night was the 20-lap IMCA Modifieds feature. This week’s feature was different from last week’s as the race went green-to-checkered. Jake Strayer grabbed an early lead and picked up his first win after holding off several challenges from Ronn Lauritzen and Joel Rust. Rust grabbed second away from Lauritzen; meanwhile Rod Clement fell back to fourth and Scott Simatovich finished fifth.

Friday will be Old Timers Lounge and Witten’s Warriors Night. Hot laps begin at 7 p.m.and racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
