‘So Long Summer Weekend of Fun’ set for this weekend

Come one, come all to the “So Long Summer Weekend of Fun,” Friday through Sunday at several Newton parks. This new event, put on by the Newton Park and Grounds department, is geared to get residents out into the park before school starts in the coming week.

“All the featured events are free and we have discounted the entry fee to the Maytag Pool on Saturday and to Westwood Golf Course on Sunday,” said Nathan Unsworth, administrative park superintendent. “We want to ensure families have the opportunity to get out and enjoy our great facilities one more time this summer.”

“A Night of Magic at Maytag” kicks off the events at 7 p.m. on Friday evening. The free, family-friendly event features the Magic and Illusions of Eric Michaels at the Maytag Bowl, sponsored by the Newton YMCA.

Set your alarms for the Park Dash 5K Fun Run/Walk starting at 8 a.m. at Sunset Park. Hosted by the Parks Department, this free, non-timed event is designed to encourage people to get up and moving.

Head to Maytag Pool after the run/walk to cool down and take advantage of the special discounted rate of $2 per person the entire day. The pool opens at noon on Saturday.

To cap off the day, take in the Damon Dotson Concert at the Maytag Bowl, starting at 8 p.m. The show is sponsored by First Newton National Bank, Eye Care Center of Newton and Noble Auto Group. Dotson, an Okoboji native, has achieved popularity throughout the Midwest and has opened for several acts including Willie Nelson, Matt Nathanson, the Beach Boys and B.B. King.

Hit the links at Westwood Golf Course on Sunday and play nine holes with a golf cart rental for only $20 for a single or take advantage of the pairs rate for $30. Call Westwood at (641) 792-3087 for tee times.

Don’t forget about your furry friends. Starting at 4 p.m. Sunday there will be a Dog Park Party at the Newton Dog Park. Located at Westwood Park, owners are encouraged to bring their hounds for an “organized play date.”
