Next week the Newton Public Library will join libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April.
Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, campuses or schools, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.
Librarians work with elected officials, small business owners, students and the public at large to discover what their communities needs are and meet them. Whether through offering ebooks and technology classes, materials for English-language learners, programs for job seekers or those to support early literacy, librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond.
The Newton Public Library serves Newton and Jasper County by providing public Internet stations, free Wi-Fi, programming for all ages, reading material, DVDs, ebooks and audiobooks, databases, genealogy and research help.
The Newton Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by having prize drawings (one for each age group) and releasing a news announcement describing big changes coming to the library and the library card management on Friday, April 18.
NLW Prize Drawings
• Children’s Culver’s drawing contest: Kids ages 4-11, pick up a drawing sheet at the library. Celebrate your favorite book by drawing a picture of it. It can be a character, event, scene or anything you liked about the book. Return the drawing to Librarian Phyllis Peter when completed by April 19. Completed drawings will win a free single scoop of Culver’ frozen custard in a cake cone or dish. Redeemable starting Sunday.
• Teen drawing: For teens ages 12-19, stop in during NLW and enter to win the “Divergent” trilogy. Entry form and box will be located in the teen section.
• Prize drawing for adults: Tell us how libraries changed your life and enter to win a bag filled with books, water bottle and other goodies. Entry form and box located at the circulation desk.
Adult Crafts
On Monday, April 28, we will have a double craft for you in the library meeting room starting at 6 p.m.
The first craft includes making hanging wreaths, hearts and stars out of puzzle pieces. The second craft includes spring cleaning and making your own home versions of Windex and various other cleaning solutions. Stay for one craft or stay for both, but please register by calling the information desk at (641) 792-4108.

Full magazines are now offered through the Ebsco database that is available through the library’s catalog.
Stop in to the library and ask at the information desk for the log-in and password to read magazines from your very own home!
