Two local students place at regional spelling bee

Two Newton students placed at a regional spelling bee Sunday in Waukee, securing invitations to compete or serve as an alternate at the state level.

The Newton Knights of Columbus hosted a spelling bee in January at the Capitol II Theatre, and winners from several local communities advanced to the regional spelling bee in Waukee. In the fifth-grade division, Meg Callahan of Newton finished in third place and is an alternate to advance to the state spelling bee. In seventh grade, Daniel Lopez-Sanders of Newton finished in first place and will compete in the state spelling bee at 1 p.m. March 2 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames.
