SULLY — Three players scored in double figures and a dominating effort on the glass led the Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team to a 65-36 home win over Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday.
The Hawks used a fast start and made seven 3-pointers in the South Iowa Cedar League game.
L-S led 17-9 after one quarter and won the second 20-5. The Hawks outscored C-M 28-22 in the second half.
“It was good to see the girls take another step in our development,” L-S head girls basketball coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We did a lot of good things tonight on both ends. Our defensive pressure was good, forcing several turnovers and easy points. We ran the floor well in the first half and passed the ball better on offense to find the open girl.”
Ava Brummel led the Hawks with 15 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals and Kate Harthoorn finished with 19 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Breah Lowry chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and four steals, Brilynn Tice collected nine points and four rebounds and Alaina Roberts added three points, six rebounds and two assists.
Isabelle Vos tallied three points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals and Brooke Harthoorn collected three points and two boards.
The Hawks (4-2, 2-1 in the SICL) shot 40 percent from the floor, made 7-of-16 from 3-point range and out-rebounded the Tigerhawks 39-25. L-S was 12-of-17 from the free-throw line.
Dakota Allen led Colfax-Mingo with 10 points and five boards. Blain Houseman added six points, four rebounds and four assists.
Isabelle Voglesong collected five points, five rebounds and three steals, Lydia Hansen tallied four points and three boards, Mallory Sipma scored four points and Victoria Woods grabbed four rebounds.
Katelyn Steenhoek contributed three points and two boards and MicKinley Bucklin grabbed two rebounds.
The Tigerhawks (2-4, 1-2) shot 34 percent from the floor, made 4-of-23 from 3 and committed 24 turnovers.
Lynnville-Sully 37, HLV 27
VICTOR — The Hawks recovered from a slow start to down HLV on Friday during SICL action.
L-S trailed by two at halftime but outscored the Warriors by 12 in the second half during a 37-27 road victory.
The Hawks won the game despite shooting only 32 percent from the floor, making only 1-of-8 from the free-throw line and committing 23 turnovers.
“Our second half was better,” Hulsing said. “We rotated on defense better, which led to us not giving up open looks. We also did a better job of protecting the ball in the second half and our movement on offense was better.”
L-S scored its 24th straight win over HLV. The Hawks are 35-1 in the series since 2008.
Kate Harthoorn led the Hawks with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals and Brummel tallied 14 points, eight boards and three steals.
Tatum Huyser, Roberts, Tice and Lowry all grabbed three rebounds. Huyser added two assists and two steals, Lowry swiped four steals and Tice dished out two assists.
Brooke Harthoorn registered five rebounds, three assists and two steals and Vos corralled two rebounds.
The Hawks were 6-of-18 from 3 and out-rebounded HLV 34-29.
Ayla Hall led HLV (2-1, 2-1) with nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.
The Warriors were plagued by 24 percent shooting from the floor and 24 turnovers. They were 2-of-17 from 3.
Lynnville-Sully 52, East Marshall 14
SULLY — The Hawks dominated East Marshall from the opening tip, crushed the Mustangs on the boards and made 14-of-23 from the foul line during a 52-14 non-conference home win on Saturday.
Lynnville-Sully led 14-7 after one before outscoring the Mustangs 20-2 in the second and 16-5 in the third. Only two points were scored in the final frame.
“Really happy with how the girls played tonight, we made steps on defense with our rotation and communication,” Hulsing said. “It was good to see us grow and build on our development from last night’s game. We did a good job of executing our offense.”
Lowry led the Hawks with 12 points and five steals and Roberts collected 10 points, seven boards and three steals.
Kate Harthoorn posted eight points, four rebounds and four steals, Huyser chipped in six points, two rebounds, two assists and four steals and Tice contributed three points, six rebounds and two assists.
Brummel finished with seven points and three boards, Brooke Harthoorn registered three rebounds, two assists and two steals and Vos scored five points.
L-S shot 47.4 percent from the floor, made 2-of-9 from 3 and out-rebounded the Mustangs 27-14. The Hawks committed 17 turnovers.
East Marshall (2-3) shot 21.7 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 32 times.
