Fast start powers L-S boys past Colfax-Mingo

SULLY — Carson Maston and Connor Deal each scored career highs and the Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team used a fast start to down Colfax-Mingo during a South Iowa Cedar League contest on Tuesday.

Three Hawks scored in double figures, six scored at least four points and L-S downed the Tigerhawks 64-22.

L-S defeated Colfax-Mingo for the ninth straight time and it is now 17-2 against the Tigerhawks (1-3, 1-2 in the SICL) since 2015.

“The boys brought good energy and effort to the game,” L-S head boys basketball coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We were able to create some turnovers, which led to some easy opportunities on offense. We also did a nice job of attacking the offensive boards. Hopefully we can keep doing those things in the future.”

The Hawks led 25-6 after one quarter and outscored their visitors 19-8 in the second and 14-3 in the third.

Maston put in a career-best 20 points and added seven rebounds and two assists.

Deal scored a career-high 13 points and finished with four rebounds and two steals and Dawson James chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Michael Spooner collected seven points and three rebounds, Will Van Vark added four points and three steals and Cameyon James tallied four points and two boards.

Hendrick Lowry collected two rebounds and two steals, Sawyer Veldhuizen tallied three rebounds and two assists, Ethan Dunsbergen dished out four assists and Terran Gosselink grabbed four rebounds in his varsity debut. Will Conover pulled down two boards in his varsity debut.

The Hawks (3-1, 2-1) shot 42 percent from the floor, made 6-of-24 from 3-point range and committed seven turnovers.

Lynnville-Sully 45, HLV 34

VICTOR — Lynnville-Sully’s dominance of HLV continued on Friday during an SICL contest.

The Hawks controlled the boards and defeated the Warriors 45-34 despite 21 turnovers and a tough shooting night.

It was the ninth straight win for L-S over HLV, and the Hawks have won 21 of the past 22 games in the series. They are 30-3 since 2008.

L-S led 10-2 after one quarter and outscored the Warriors 13-6 in the third. HLV won the second 11-7 and both teams scored 15 in the fourth.

“We struggled to get things going offensively due to our turnovers,” Harthoorn said. “Fortunately, we played good enough defense to get the win. Hopefully we can learn from this game and make the proper adjustments.”

Dawson James led the Hawks with 17 points and nine rebounds. Maston added nine points, 11 rebounds and two assists and Veldhuizen chipped in nine points and two assists.

Lowry collected three points, eight rebounds and two assists, Van Vark tallied five points, six rebounds and two assists and Dunsbergen, Deal and Cameyon James all pulled down three boards.

The Hawks shot 36 percent from the floor, made 5-of-24 from 3 and connected on 4-of-9 from the free-throw line. L-S out-rebounded its hosts 47-29.

Peyton Roth led HLV with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The Warriors (2-1, 2-1) shot 26 percent from the floor and were 3-of-25 from 3.

Lynnville-Sully 77, East Marshall 67

SULLY — Veldhuizen put in a career-best 28 points, Maston grabbed a career-high 13 boards and Lowry dished out a career-most nine assists during the Hawks’ 77-67 home victory over East Marshall on Saturday.

Lynnville-Sully won the non-conference contest thanks to a fast start and 59 percent shooting from the floor.

The Hawks claimed their fourth straight win over East Marshall (0-3). They were 12-of-23 from 3 and committed only 10 turnovers. L-S was 7-of-16 from the foul line.

“It was a good win for the Hawks,” Harthoorn said. “We played more like we are capable of playing. We did a much better job taking care of the basketball, which resulted in a lot of quality shots. It was exciting to see different guys step up.”

Veldhuizen shot 7-of-10 from 3 and finished with four rebounds and three assists and Maston’s first career double-double included 12 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

Dunsbergen put in a career-best 11 points and was 3-of-3 from long range. Van Vark tallied five points, six rebounds and seven assists.

Lowry posted four points, three rebounds and a career-high nine assists, Cameyon James contributed six points, two rebounds and two assists and Dawson James scored six points and grabbed three boards. Deal scored five points.
