Newton boys win 10 events, claim meet title at Ottumwa

Milburn wins shot put with massive career-best throw

OTTUMWA — Nick Milburn unleashed a big career-best throw in the shot put, Isaiah Hansen broke through a barrier in the high jump and the Newton boys track and field team won 10 events and claimed the meet championship at the Don Newell Classic on Tuesday.

The Cardinals scored 154 points at Shafer Stadium. The rest of the seven-team field included Fairfield (139), Ottumwa (111), Pella (107), Burlington (40), Wayne (37) and the Ottumwa JV (1).

Milburn, who will compete at the Drake Relays in the shot put on Thursday, led eight individual winners. He won the shot put with a career-best toss of 56 feet, 10 inches. That currently ranks sixth in the state.

Koltt Ahn (44-10) and Zach Felten (44-4) also had career-best throws in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Felten won the discus with a heave of 139-10 and Hansen and Cade Bauer went 1-2 in the high jump. Hansen won the high jump with a career-best leap of 6-0 and Bauer matched a career-best with a jump of 5-10.

Lance Zaabel finished first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:31.18 and placed second in the 1,600 in 4:58.75.

The Cardinals doubled up in the 100 and 200, too. Caden Klein’s only event of the night produced a win in the 100. He won the race in 11.0 seconds and Jace Auen was fourth in a career-best 11.81.

Ali Yahia (23.41) and Colter Shaw (24.12) both posted career-best times in the 200 and finished 1-4.

Dawson Maki added a win in the 400 with a career-best time of 53.25, Bauer won the 400 hurdles in 59.24 and Reilly Trease (15.14) won the 110 high hurdles.

Newton won the shuttle hurdle and 4x400 relays, placed second in the sprint medley and took third in the 4x800.

The winning shuttle hurdle relay team included Trease, Cade Bauer, Drew Bauer and Austin Arauz and they finished in 1:02.25.

Dawson Maki, Shaw, Mason Mendez and Yahia took the gold in the 4x400 in 3:39.09.

Nick Thomason, Auen, Ergenbright and Yahia finished second in the sprint medley relay in 1:35.91 and the 4x800 relay team of Dawson Maki, Reagan Maki, Levi Zaabel and Shaw took third in a season-best 8:45.75.

Joining Milburn at the Drake Relays this weekend will be Klein in the 100, 400 and 400 hurdles, Trease in the 110 high hurdles and Thomason, Trease, Ergenbright and Klein in the 4x200 relay and Thomason, Trease, Ergenbright and Yahia in the 4x100 relay.
