Valtman registered a pair of wins for Newton despite losing the first set in each match. He won 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 1 singles and then paired with Evan Marshall to win 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5 at No. 1 singles.
The other win came from Freese at No. 5 singles. He won 6-2, 6-3.
It’s believed to be the only match wins against a top-10 ranked team in at least 15 seasons.
Newton’s No. 2 doubles team of Ezra Bartell and Kaden Marshall dropped a close three-set match 4-6, 6-0, 10-4.
