Newton girls shut out Des Moines North

Sophia Coady and Aliviah Ross both scored goals, Addy Cibula made five saves and the Newton girls soccer team shut out Des Moines North, 3-0, on Monday.

The Cardinals led the non-conference match 2-0 at halftime at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Both teams took eight shots and North had an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Newton posted its third shutout of the season, and the Polar Bears (3-4) were shut out for the third time.

Coady, who also delivered an assist, scored her team-leading ninth goal and Ross put in her seventh. The third goal was a North own goal. Cibula now has 80 saves this spring.

The Cardinals, who are 3-1 against North since 2015, are 3-0-1 in their last four matches after starting the season 2-4.
