Seven victories not enough for L-S girls at Dave Robinson Relays

Tatum Huyser

NEVADA — Tatum Huyser won three individual events and qualified for the Drake Relays for the first time in her career, but seven wins were not enough to vault the Lynnville-Sully girls track and field team to the top of the standings at the Dave Robinson Relays on Thursday.

The Hawks placed third three times and scored 120 points for a third-place team finish.

“The Hawks continue to do a lot of good things on the track and in field events,” L-S head girls track and field coach Kevin Johnson said. “We continue to see improvements and the girls are gaining a lot of confidence each meet.”

Kate Harthoorn

Baxter won the meet championship with 164.5 points, while Collins-Maxwell (127) edged the Hawks by seven points in second. Colfax-Mingo (101), Coon Rapids-Bayard (85.5), BGM (39), GMG (28), host Colo-NESCO (28) and Meskwaki Settlement School (18).

Huyser claimed three of the Hawks’ seven victories. She won the 100-meter dash in 13.26 seconds, sprinted to a win in the 200 in 26.87 and posted a career-best leap of 5 feet, 3 inches to win the high jump.

That was good enough secure her spot in the Drake Relays high jump, which will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday inside Drake Stadium.

Lynnville-Sully won four relays and posted season-best times in the 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

The Hawks won the 4x400 in a season-best 4 minutes, 30.46 seconds with Kate Harthoorn, Emma Parkinson, Peyton Sharp and Isabelle Vos.

Emma Parkinson

The winning 4x800 relay team included Harthoorn, Olivia Norrish, Parkinson and Sharp, and they finished the race in 10:57.28.

Brilynn Tice, Morgan Hay, Breah Lowry and Sharp won the sprint medley relay in a season-best time of 2:04.18.

The distance medley relay team of Kenna Johnson, Vos, Brooke Harthoorn and Norrish won the race in 4:59.81.

The 4x100 relay team also was third. That group featured Tice, Cori Fisk, Hay and Lowry and they posted a time of 55.54.

The Hawks did not finish second in any event, but took third in three. Parkinson (2:43.62) and Sharp (2:44.3) were 3-4 in the 800, Mandeesa Vos (11:47.05) placed third in the 3,000 and Parkinson took fourth in the 400 in a career-best 1:09.11.

Peyton Sharp

Lowry posted a career-best time of 29.4 to place fourth in the 200, Norrish (5:55.94) finished fifth in the 1,500 and Hay (13-4) was fifth in the long jump.

“We saw a lot of good things and some young kids are really working hard,” Coach Johnson said. “We’ll continue to build on these early meets.”
