NEVADA — The Lynnville-Sully boys track and field team claimed just one win at the Dave Robinson Relays on Thursday.
But a plethora of runner-up finishes helped the Hawks place second as a team during a meet hosted by Colo-NESCO.
The Hawks scored 133 points in second. Baxter won six events and claimed the meet championship with 151.

The rest of the nine-team field featured Colfax-Mingo (103), Collins-Maxwell (89), host Colo-NESCO (82), BGM (72), GMG (45), Coon Rapids-Bayard (40) and Meskwaki Settlement School (15).
“The Hawks battled all night for the meet championship, and despite scoring points in all 19 events, down the stretch Baxter proved to be just a little better to get the victory,” L-S head boys track and field coach Darin Arkema said.
Terran Gosselink got the Hawks’ lone win in the 400-meter hurdles. He won the race in a career-best time 57.37 seconds.
The Hawks scored 30 of their points in field events. Connor Deal was the runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches and Gosselink (5-6) finished third, Dawson James (43-2 1/2) and Cameyon James (36-11) were 2-6 in the shot put, Wyatt Mathis finished fifth in the discus with a career-best heave of 117-2 and Ethan Dunsbergen posted a career-best leap of 18-10 to place fifth in the long jump.
“Ethan Dunsbergen had a huge PR by more than a foot,” Arkema said. “The field event competitors got our night started well.”

Blake Wilmesmeier and Colton Alberts went 2-3 in the 3,200 with times of 10 minutes, 44.78 seconds and 10:45.24, respectively.
Deal also placed third in the 200 in a career-best time of 25.13 seconds, Hendrick Lowry (5:07.96) was fourth in the 1,600 and Sawyer Veldhuizen finished fifth in the 110 high hurdles in a career-best 17.62 seconds.
Lowry posted a career-best time of 57.57 to place fifth in the 400, Jack Bowlin (12.58) was sixth in the 100 and Wilmesmeier ended up sixth in the 800 with a career-best 2:17.98.
The Hawks were second in four relays and placed third in the distance medley relay.
The 4x200 relay team of Jordan Dunsbergen, Jaiden Richards, Bowlin and Jace Johnson took second in 1:36.68. It was a season-best time by more than 3 seconds.

Ethan Dunsbergen, Michael Spooner, Veldhuizen and Jace Johnson finished second in the 4x400 relay in 3:41.96, which was a season-best time by 10 seconds.
The Hawks’ 4x800 relay team of Evan Arkema, Trace Carlson, Keegan Schnell and Sam Terlouw placed second in 10:03.56.
The shuttle hurdle relay team took second in 1:06.03. That team was Deal, Ashton Rozendaal, Matthew Mintle and Gosselink.
The third place distance medley relay team of Ethan Dunsbergen, Spooner, Veldhuizen and Wilmesmeier posted a time of 4:04.11.
“We spent some time on Wednesday at the start of practice working specifically on relay handoffs, running through the handoff and leaving more aggressively,” Arkema said. “I saw plenty of improvement in that department.”
