WAVERLY — Evan Marshall returned to the singles lineup for the Newton boys tennis team, but the Cardinals played their toughest opponent of the season to date and lost 9-0 to Class 1A No. 4 Waverly Shell-Rock on Thursday.
Marshall lost in three sets in his singles debut and Ethan Valtman dropped his first singles match of the spring. Valtman and Kaden Marshall also lost the closest doubles match 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot.
Evan Marshall lost 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 at No. 2 singles, Valtman fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Ezra Bartell fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Those were the closest singles matches of the night.
Waverly-Shell Rock improved to 5-1, while Newton dropped to 2-3.
