NORWALK — The defending Class 3A state champions put the band back together in the sprint medley relay on Monday and the Cardinal foursome now sits in the top five after a winning performance at the Norwalk Boys Invitational.
The Newton boys track and field also had a big night in hurdles, and three wins and eight top-three finishes led the Cardinals to a third-place team finish.
Newton scored 107 points in third. ADM (150.5) edged host Norwalk (141.5) to win the meet championship. The Cardinals were seven points better than Grinnell (100) and the rest of the eight-team field included Bondurant-Farrar (79), Ames (34), Indianola (20) and the Norwalk JV (16).

The lone individual win came from Nick Thomason in the 200-meter dash. He was clocked in 23.39 seconds and also placed second in the 100 in 11.17.
Reilly Trease posted a career-best time of 14.92 seconds in the 110 high hurdles, and that was good enough for second. It also ranks fifth in 3A. Austin Arauz placed sixth in the event with a time of 16.39.
Thomason and Trease ran the first two legs of the sprint medley relay and joined Christian Ergenbright and Caden Klein in the race for the first time since winning the 2024 state title.
The foursome won the race in a season-best time of 1 minute, 35.28 seconds, which ranks fifth in the class.

Trease also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay to a win. That group, which also included Arauz, Cade Bauer and Drew Bauer, posted a winning and season-best time of 1:01.89, which ranks ninth in 3A.
Dawson Maki, Reagan Maki, Levi Zaabel and Colter Shaw finished third in the 4x800 relay in a season-best time of 9:11.51.
Isaiah Hansen and Cade Bauer went 2-4 in the high jump. Hansen finished second with a career-best leap of 5 feet, 10 inches and Bauer was fourth with a jump of 5-8.
Zach Felten finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 129-9, Lance Zaabel was fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:39.16 and Ali Yahia and Dawson Maki came in 3-5 in the 400.

Yahia was third in the 400 with a career-best time of 54.59. Dawson Maki placed fifth in 55.63.
The Cardinals also doubled up in the 400 hurdles. Arauz was fifth in 1:01.28 and Cade Bauer placed sixth in 1:03.23.
