L-S girls place sixth against tough field at Pella Christian

Huyser sets new school record in 100-meter dash

PELLA — Tatum Huyser moved into the top five in a pair of sprinting events and set a new school record in the 100-meter dash to lead the Lynnville-Sully girls track and field team on Tuesday.

The Hawks scored 58.5 points in sixth at the Pella Christian Invitational. Pella won the meet title with 202.5 points and host Pella Christian (101) edged Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (100) for second. The rest of the top five featured PCM (75) and Grinnell (59). L-S was better than Iowa City Regina (52) and Pleasantville (47) in the eight-team field.

“There were many season-best times for relays and personal records for individuals,” L-S head girls track and field coach Kevin Johnson said. “They continue to work hard and build as individuals and as a team. It was another good night for the Hawks overall.”

Huyser placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 1 inch. That’s currently tied for the eight-best mark in Class 1A.

She also was third in both the 100- and 200-meter dash. Huyser posted a career-best and school-record time of 12.73 seconds in the 100 and registered a career-best 26.46 in the 200. Both times rank fourth in 1A.

Mandeesa Vos also scored a pair of top-four finishes. She was fourth in the 1,500 with a career-best time of 5 minutes, 30.12 seconds.

Vos placed third in the 3,000 with a career-best time of 12:05.1 and Olivia Norrish was fifth in 12:35.31.

The Hawks were fourth in the 4x800 relay. The group of Emma Parkinson, Brooke Harthoorn, Kate Harthoorn and Peyton Sharp posted a season-best time of 10:51.19.

“There was some great competition all night long as the Hawks battled,” Johnson said. “The Hawks did a lot of really good things throughout.  We’ll continue to build on this meet moving forward.”
