Newton senior Hailey Dickerson held her signing day for Central College’s triathlon team last week at the high school. She will be the third athlete from Newton to join the Dutch triathlon team in the past four seasons.

Newton senior Hailey Dickerson, second from the left, signed with the Central College triathlon team last week at the high school. Hailey Dickerson said she chose the Dutch over opportunities with Coe College and Cornell College. “I went and checked out Central, and it was closer to home, which helped in my decision,” Dickerson said. “I have known the coach (Jennie Hedrick-Rozenberg) since her time in YMCA swimming. I looked at Cornell for basketball but didn’t really want to go there.” Like with her former teammates who are on the Central College triathlon team right now, Dickerson will have to adjust to the biking part of the sport. “I’m a little bit nervous about the biking part,” Hailey Dickerson said. “I can do it enough to survive but just have to get better at it.” Newton alumni Grace Benson and Estella Allen will be a senior and sophomore, respectively, next season. They played a small role in Dickerson choosing Central College. “When I talked to the team, they were all nice and the atmosphere is what I need in a team and a school,” Hailey Dickerson said. “Grace and Estella told me great things about the team, too.” Hailey Dickerson plans to major in elementary education.
