Sprinters power Newton boys to another team win at Osky Relays

OSKALOOSA — Caden Klein won three individual events and is now top 10 in the state in all three, and the Newton boys track and field team used five victories to win the 97th Osky Relays on Thursday.

The Cardinals edged Knoxville by three points at the top of the standings thanks to 11 top-three finishes at Statesmen Community Stadium.

Newton won the meet championship with 115 points. Knoxville (112), Pella (84), Carlisle (79) and Des Moines North (56) finalized the top five and the rest of the 10-team field included Ottumwa (53), Albia (40), Oskaloosa (39), Martensdale-St. Marys (10) and Twin Cedars (1).

Klein won the 100-meter dash in a career-best 10.71 seconds, which ranks third in the state and second in Class 3A. It’s also under the Drake Relays Blue Standard time of 10.8.

Nick Thomason’s career-best time of 10.98 placed him third and that time ranks sixth in 3A.

Klein also won the 400 in a season-best 50.27 and claimed a win in the 400 hurdles in 55.17. Those times rank 10th and ninth, respectively, in the state and third and second, respectively, in 3A.

Cade Bauer competed in the 400 hurdles, too, and placed third with a career-best 1 minute, .44 seconds.

Christian Ergenbright and Thomason went 1-2 in the 200. Ergenbright’s career-best time of 22.3 ranks tied for ninth in the state and tied for fifth in 3A. Thomason posted a career-best 22.79 in second.

Reilly Trease also moved into the top five in the 110 high hurdles after his season-best time of 14.97 placed him second. He ranks fourth in 3A.

Austin Arauz was sixth in the race with a career-best time of 16.38.

Reagan Maki and Levi Zaabel were 5-6 in the 800, Zach Felton placed fifth in the discus and Bauer took fourth in the high jump.

Maki (2:17.10) and Zaabel (2:17.28) were separated by .18 seconds, but Maki’s time was a career best.

Felton’s best throw covered 126 feet in the discus and Bauer’s highest mark in the high jump was 5-7.

The Cardinals won the shuttle hurdle relay, placed second in the 4x200 and finished third in the sprint medley relay.

Trease, Cade Bauer, Drew Bauer and Arauz won the shuttle hurdle in 1:03.81.

Dawson Maki, Jace Auen, Mason Mendez and Ali Yahia placed second in the 4x200 with a time of 1:37.

The sprint medley relay team featured Auen, Ergenbright, Dawson Maki and Yahia and they posted a season-best time of 1:44.66 in third.
