Newton girls fall to Indianola in LHC tennis action

Cardinals win two matches against Indians at Aurora Heights Park

Emersyn Gross improved to 3-1 in singles and Sloan Brodersen and Kaetlin McPartlin scored a two-set win in doubles, but the Newton girls tennis team fell short against Indianola on Thursday.

The Cardinals fell to 0-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference following a 9-2 home loss to the Indians at Aurora Heights Park.

Gross won her match 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and Brodersen and McPartlin’s win at No. 4 doubles was 7-5, 6-4.

Brodersen and Morgan Frehse dropped close sets in their singles loss, while Brooklyn Sterling and Camryn Andrew fell in three sets in their doubles match.

Frehse lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Brodersen fell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Benson and Frehse came up a little short at No. 1 doubles, losing 6-3, 6-3.

The closest loss of the night came at No. 3 doubles. Sterling and Andrew won the first set but were defeated 5-7, 6-2, 13-11.

Indianola improved to 3-1 and 2-0 in the conference, while Newton (1-3) lost its third straight dual.
