Coady’s first career goal not enough for Newton girls in loss to Eagles

Newly-ranked Pella Christian rallies past visiting Cardinals

PELLA — Sophia Coady scored her first career goal to give the Cardinals a halftime lead, but the Newton girls soccer team dropped its Little Hawkeye Conference matchup with Pella Christian on Tuesday.

The Eagles got two goals from Lexi Terpstra and rallied past the Cardinals 3-1 in their conference opener.

Terpstra now has 11 goals this spring, which ranks tied for sixth in the state. Esther Ford scored the Eagles’ other goal and Julianne Van Gorp made eight saves.

Addy Cibula collected five saves for Newton and now has 45 this season, which ranks 11th in the state.

Newton (1-3, 2-0) had a 21-7 advantage in shots and an 11-5 surplus in shots on goal.

Pella Christian, which moved into the Class 1A rankings at No. 15 on Wednesday, is outscoring its opponents 14-3 this spring.

The Cardinals are 9-4-1 against the Eagles (4-0, 1-0) since 2011, but Pella Christian has won three straight matches in the series.
