BOONE — Tori White won three individual events, Camryn Klein joined her with four overall victories and the Newton girls track and field team used 12 wins to claim its first team title of the season at the Boone Invitational on Thursday.
The Cardinals scored 229.5 points in their outdoor opener at Goeppinger Field. That was well in front of runner-up and host Boone (146.5), while Marshalltown (82), Fort Dodge (62) and the Waukee Northwest junior varsity (51) completed the five-team field.
“It was great to have the full team competing today,” Newton head girls track and field coach Rachelle Tipton said. “After a long stretch of training, we could tell everyone was ready to go.
“But as fun as this night was, the athletes definitely see where improvements can be made and are hungry for more.”

Newton scored 12 wins and had 10 runner-up finishes, four third-place tallies and four 1-2 finishes. The Cardinals also were 1-2-3-5 in the 1,500-meter run.
White led the charge for Newton. She won the 100 hurdles in 16.73 seconds and won the 400 hurdles in 1 minute, 14.33 seconds.
Macy Lampe took second in the 100 hurdles in 17.03 and Sims was the runner-up in the 400 hurdles in a career-best 1:14.59.
White’s third individual win came in the high jump. Her winning mark was 5 feet, 0 inches. Ellie DeVries finished second with a leap of 4-8.

The final win for White came in the shuttle hurdle relay. She anchored the group that also featured Lampe, Klein and Sims and they finished in 1:09.85, which currently ranks second in Class 3A.
The Cardinals’ 1-2-3-5 finish in the 1,500 was led by Harper Barton in 5:23.84. Audrey Muckler finished second in a career-best 5:24.5, Temple Barton was third in a career-best 5:32.03 and Peyton Ray’s fifth-place time was clocked in 5:55.38.
Muckler did win the 3,000. She was clocked in a career-best 11:28.14 and Alexis Sorensen placed second in a career-best 11:31.65. Both times were faster than any time the Cardinals posted last season.
Bella Winther scored a win in the 800 and Sorensen was fourth. They were clocked in 2:28.98 and 2:52.5, respectively.

The final individual win came from Abby Bruce in the long jump. Her leap of 15-10 won the event and Sims placed third with a leap of 14-9.
Newton was second in the 100, 200 and 400.
Lauren Clarke’s career-best time of 12.68 earned the silver medal in the 100 and is the ninth-fastest time in 3A so far. Lola Rivera took third in the 100 in 13.39.
Rivera (28.25) and Bruce (29.15) were 2-5 in the 200 and Alex Riney (1:06.9) and Alivia Conley (1:09.47) were 2-5 in the 400.

Brooke Garvis finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 31-6 1/4 and placed fifth in the discus with a heave of 90-8.
Addie Hammerly also competed in the discus and placed fourth with a toss of 93-4.
Newton claimed first in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and sprint medley relays and was second in the 4x100 and distance medley.
Bruce, Rivera, Klein and Clarke won the 4x200 in a season-best 1:50.17.

The winning 4x400 relay team featured Klein, Winther, Riney and Clarke. The foursome’s time of 4:22.51 was not a season best but it was faster than any time the Cardinals posted last spring.
Harper Barton, Riney, Ray and Winther won the 4x800 in 10:43.36 and Talia Friedman, Hailey Dickerson, Laek Sullivan and Alivia Kingery placed third overall and was the junior varsity winner in 11:56.28.
The winning sprint medley relay team featured Lampe, Neveya Miller, Jazmyn Rivera and Klein and they won the race in a season-best 2:00.82.

The 4x100 foursome of BrookLynn Britton, Jazmyn Rivera, Bruce and Lola Rivera placed second in a season-best 53.08.
Britton, Miller, Dickerson and Temple Barton took second in the distance medley relay in 4:59.2.
White and Klein both produced four wins, while Winther won three times and Harper Barton, Bruce, Riney, Clarke and Lampe all collected two victories.
