PCM boys score five wins, finish second in outdoor opener

Mustangs trail only Class 3A Gilbert at Roland-Story

STORY CITY — The Mustangs won a pair of field events, finished in the top two in five relays and the PCM boys track and field team placed second at the Roland-Story Coed Invitiational on Friday.

PCM collected five wins and grabbed 17 top-three finishes in its outdoor opener.

The Mustangs scored 104 points and trailed only Class 3A Gilbert (128) at the top of the standings.

Chase Wagaman

Roland-Story (75), Southeast Valley (59) and Hampton-Dumont-CAL (25) completed the five-team field.

The individual wins came from Chase Wagaman and Gavin Van Gorp, and the Mustangs also won the 4x100, 4x400 and distance medley relays.

Wagaman won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches and Evan Wendt placed third with a mark of 5-4.

Van Gorp placed first in the long jump with a leap of 20-9, which currently ranks seventh in Class 2A. Finn Wilson also competed and took fifth with a jump of 18-5.

Adrien Robbins

The winning 4x100 relay team of Evan Jones, Tad Wilson, Adrien Robbins and Riley Graber finished the race in a season-best time of 44.09 seconds.

Coby DeRaad, Kash Fischer, Robbins and Graber won the 4x400 relay in a season-best 3 minutes, 32.36 seconds.

The distance medley relay team of Jones, Tad Wilson, Graber and Fischer won the race in a season-best 3:39.67, which was faster than any time the Mustangs posted last year.

PCM had six second-place finishes. The 4x800 relay team of DeRaad, Carson Hansen, Joe Shaver and Kolby Clark took second in a season-best 8:53.47 and the shuttle hurdle relay foursome of Robbins, Jake Winters, Jaden Houser and Van Gorp placed second in 1:03.52.

Harlan Shannon and Alex Wendt finished 2-3 in the discus and Alex Wendt and Hayden Shannon placed 2-3 in the shot put.

Harlan Shannon finished second in the discus with a career-best toss of 130-10 and Alex Wendt was third with a heave of 130-5.

Evan Jones

Alex Wendt’s career-best toss of 44-8 1/2 was second in the shot put and Hayden Shannon took third with a career-best throw of 41-8 1/4.

The other runner-up finishes came from Joey Ferneding and Finn Wilson.

Ferneding was second in the 400 with a career-best time of 54.7 and Gavin DeRaad placed fifth in 59.42.

Riley Graber

Finn Wilson’s career-best 23.9 placed him second in the 200 and Landon Ridgeway was fifth in 25.41.

Two other Mustangs finished third and the sprint medley relay also was third.

Gavin Steenhoek’s career-best 59.99 placed him third in the 400 hurdles, and the time currently ranks eighth in 2A. Hansen took fifth in the event with a career-best 1:00.81.

Alex Wendt

Van Gorp finished third in the 110 high hurdles in 15.43, which currently sits sixth in 2A.

The sprint medley relay team of Lewis Daye, Easton Morris, Steenhoek and Ferneding wound up third in 1:41.81.

Shaver (2:17.94) edged Clark (2:17.96) for sixth in the 800, Daye (11.63) finished sixth in his 100 debut and Owen Osterhaus (11:12.34) was sixth in his 3,200 debut. Wyatt Vannoy (5:55.78) also placed seventh in the 1,600.
