DES MOINES — For the second straight season, the Newton girls tennis team opened the season with an 11-0 win over Des Moines East.
The Cardinals also downed the Scarlets by that same score for the third straight season despite welcoming a mostly new flock to the varsity lineup.

No. 1 Paige Benson, No. 3 Alexis Dirksen, No. 4 Morgan Frehse and No. 6 Emersyn Gross all won their singles matches 9-0 and No. 2 Brooklyn Sterling and No. 5 Sloan Brodersen each won 9-1.
It was the varsity singles debut for Frehse, Gross, Sterling and Brodersen.
Benson and Dirksen combined to win their No. 1 doubles match 9-2, Sterling and Frehse won 9-0 at No. 2 doubles and Brodersen and Camryn Andrew won 9-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Gross and Olivia Bell swept East 9-0 at No. 4 doubles and Kaetlin McPartlin and Anna DeVries registered a 9-1 victory at No. 5 doubles.
It was the varsity debut for Andrew, Bell, McPartlin and DeVries.
