Milburn, Klein lead Newton boys at track and field indoor opener

Cardinals open season at Dickinson Relays

CEDAR FALLS — Six top-30 finishes highlighted the Newton boys track and field team at the Dickinson Relays on Monday.

The Cardinals opened their season at the University of Northern Iowa’s indoor facility and Nick Milburn led the way with an eighth-place finish in the shot put.

Newton’s 4x400 relay team also placed 10th and Caden Klein took 11th in the 60-meter dash.

Three Cardinals finished in the top 100 of the shot put. Milburn’s toss of 50 feet, 1 1/2 inches placed him eighth, while Koltt Ahn (41-11 1/4) took 62nd and Jose Benitez (40-0 1/4) finished 88th.

Klein advanced to the finals in the 60 dash and placed 11th with a time of 7.05 seconds. His 7.09 in the preliminary round was 11th and the top 16 advanced to the finals. Nick Thomason ran 7.17 in 22nd.

Reilly Trease finished 17th in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.71 and Austin Arauz was 65th in 9.32.

Ali Yahia ran 23.65 in the 200 for 23rd, Lance Zaabel took 29th in the 3,200 with a time of 10 minutes, 45.51 seconds and Dawson Maki led a trio of Cardinals in the 400.

Maki finished 47th in 55.23, Colter Shaw placed 68th in 55.95 and Yahia was 97th in 56.97.

Reagan Maki (2:19.93) edged Levi Zaabel (2:20.99) in the 800 as the Cardinal duo was 88th and 97th, respectively.

Newton’s 4x200 relay team placed 10th with Thomason, Trease, Klein and Jace Auen. They finished in 1:35.95.

The 4x800 relay team featured Reagan Maki, Lance Zaabel, Levi Zaabel and Dawson Maki and they finished 33rd in 9:12.93.
