Newton’s Andrew signs with William Penn men’s basketball program

Cardinal senior plans to major in sports management

Newton senior Creighton Andrew, seated center, signed with the William Penn men’s basketball team on Friday afternoon at the high school. He was joined at his signing by his mother Nancy Andrew, left, his father Robert Andrew and his sister Camryn Andrew, back. “Jake Ingle took me down there for some open gyms and I met with head coach (John) Henry in his office,” Andrew said. “I took him up on his opportunity. I expect to help build a winning culture back up. That’s the main goal.” Creighton Andrew said he chose William Penn over possible opportunities at Central College. He plans to major in sports management with the hopes of someday becoming a basketball coach. “I like the campus and I like that it’s not too big but not too small,” Andrew said. “It’s easier to get help from teachers when you need it. They can help you more one-on-one.” William Penn head men’s basketball coach John Henry is a Newton native and former Cardinal who tries to give back to his community any time he has the opportunity to do so. “We’ve had great success in helping players become coaches,” Henry said. “I like his character and his work ethic. I want to surround myself our program with high-character kids and Newton kids. This is where I’m from. If I can give back to the program that I started in, why not? I’ve known Creighton’s dad Bob a long time. We went to school together. This was a no-brainer to me.” Henry expects Andrew to start on the Statesmen’s JV program. “Then we’ll take it year by year and see how he develops,” Henry said. (Troy Hyde/Newton News)
