White leads Cardinal trio on all-LHC squad

Garvis nabs academic all-state recognition

Tori White

The Newton girls basketball team doubled its conference win total from the season before, reached double-digit victories for the season and junior Tori White ranked in the top 10 in four different statistical categories this past winter.

For her efforts, White scored second-team recognition on the all-Little Hawkeye Conference squad recently.

She was joined on the team by seniors Alex Garvis and Alex Riney, who both were honorable mention selections.

Alex Garvis

All-conference recognition is based on statistics inside conference play only.

The all-LHC teams were released after Dallas Center-Grimes and Norwalk both lost in the Class 4A state semifinals on Thursday night.

White earned second team all-conference for the first time in her career after ranking third in the league in rebounds per game at 7.9.

She also averaged 7.0 points and 1.2 assists per game, ranked fourth in the conference in steals per game at 2.8 and tied for ninth in the LHC in blocks per game at .5. Her 48 percent shooting from the floor also ranked 10th in the conference.

Garvis, who also earned academic all-state recognition from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, was an honorable mention selection for the third straight season.

Alex Riney

Garvis averaged 4.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest and tied for ninth in steals per game at 1.8. She shot 61 percent from the free-throw line.

Riney averaged 5.4 points, 1.3 steals and .8 assists per game and ranked 11th in the league in rebounds per contest at 4.3. Her 12 made 3-pointers ranked 13th in the conference.
