Newton’s Rivera signs with Grand View University track and field team
Cardinal senior will primarily run sprints for Vikings

Newton senior Lola Rivera, center, signed with the Grand View University women’s track and field team during a signing ceremony at the high school on Tuesday. Lola Rivera picked Grand View University after making visits to the University of Northern Iowa and Central College. “The location and the size of the school really sold me,” Lola Rivera said. “It’s close to home. I didn’t want a big college, but Grand View also isn’t too small. Everyone will know who you are. You aren’t just a number.” Lola Rivera plans to major in business administration and will compete mostly in 100s and 200s for the track and field team. “She’s a competitor and wants to compete,” Grand View Director of Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field Miradieu Joseph said. “I like developing athletes. I think she’s untapped still. As long as she’s willing to take the tough love I’m about to give her and know that it’s for her to be successful, she’ll get to where she wants to go.” Rivera said Newton alum and current Grand View Viking Addisyn Terpstra played a factor in her decision. “She recommended the school and was on the administration team that gave me my tour around campus,” Rivera said.
