Lynnville-Sully’s Harthoorn scores 1A all-district basketball honor

Lynnville-Sully junior Kate Harthoorn led the Hawks in points and assists per game this past winter. And she ranked in the top 13 in Class 1A in three different shooting categories.

For her efforts, Harthoorn was named to the 1A Southeast District squad by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association recently.

Harthoorn was part of the 10-person district squad which included Montezuma’s Ellen Cook and Shiressa Wetering, HLV’s Ayla Hall and Iowa Valley’s Lydia Kriegel.

Montezuma head girls basketball coach Janel Burgess was voted Southeast District Coach of the Year after guiding her Bravettes to the state tournament.

Lynnville-Sully senior Alaina Roberts was one of five girls basketball players in Jasper County to be named to the IGCA’s academic all-state squad, too.

Harthoorn led Lynnville-Sully in points and assists per game at 12.5 and 2.5, respectively. She also ranked second on the squad with 2.5 steals per game and grabbed 3.8 rebounds per contest.

Harthoorn’s 299 points, 59 steals and 60 assists all were single-season career highs. She enters her final prep season with 766 career points.

Her 67 made 3-pointers also was a career high and is currently tied for sixth in 1A. Harthoorn ranked fifth in 1A with a 3-point percentage of 39 and her 75.5 percent shooting from the free-throw line is 13th in the class.
