Newton girls end season with regional loss to No. 10 Carlisle

CARLISLE — The Newton girls basketball team trailed Class 4A No. 10 Carlisle by only three points at halftime of their 4A Region 6 semifinal game on Saturday.

But 20 turnovers plagued the Cardinals and the host Wildcats were dominant in the second half during a 60-31 postseason win.

Carlisle won its sixth straight against Newton since the Cardinals won the first meeting in 2013. It was only the second meeting since 2018.

Alex Garvis finished with eight points, two assists and two steals in her final prep game, while Tori White added seven points and seven rebounds. White was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Alex Riney posted six points and four rebounds, Hailey Dickerson totaled three points and three boards and Evie Main collected three points and two rebounds in their final prep games. The fifth senior who will be lost to graduation is Bella Winther.

Camryn Klein tallied two rebounds and two assists off the bench and reserve Addyson Cibula grabbed two boards, too.

The Cardinals (11-12) shot 34.4 percent from the floor, made 3-of-9 from 3-point range and sunk 6-of-8 from the foul line.

Carlisle (18-4) outscored Newton 41-15 in the second half. The Wildcats get No. 6 Dallas Center-Grimes (18-4) in the regional final at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Grimes.
