L-S boys return to district championship game

Hawks down Moulton-Udell, Collins-Maxwell to open district play

SULLY — Carson Maston’s career-high scoring night and a big double-double led the Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team over Collins-Maxwell on Thursday.

The Hawks led by six after the first quarter and outscored the Spartans by three in the fourth during a 63-55 home win in Class 1A District 12 semifinal action.

Maston’s career-high 23 points led L-S, and he added 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks and Dawson James tallied 13 points, two rebounds and three assists.

Lynnville-Sully (18-5) shot 52 percent from the floor, made 14-of-24 from the free-throw line and committed nine turnovers.

Hendrick Lowry chipped in five points, two rebounds, six assists and two steals in the win, while Will Van Vark added nine points and three assists and Connor Deal posted seven points and three steals.

Sawyer Veldhuizen had four points and six boards and Cameyon James grabbed two rebounds.

The Hawks were playing the Spartans (18-4) for the first time since 2019 and are 4-0 in the series since 2016.

Lynnville-Sully 83, Moulton-Udell 21

Ten players scored at least four points, the Hawks buried 11 treys and a fast start propelled Lynnville-Sully past Moulton-Udell in the quarterfinal round of the 1A District 12 tournament on Feb. 17.

Veldhuizen scored 14 points, Deal matched a career best with 13 points and the Hawks used a fast start to down the Eagles 83-21.

It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2015, and the Hawks are 3-0 in the series since 2009.

Maston tallied nine points, four rebounds and three steals, Van Vark chipped in eight points, five assists and four steals, Jack Bowlin totaled seven points, five rebounds and five steals and Deal swiped four steals.

Lowry finished with five points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals, Terran Gosselink registered four points, six rebounds and two steals and Michael Spooner scored nine points, dished out two assists and swiped two steals off the bench.

Dawson James posted four points and three rebounds, Will Conover put in four points and Cameyon James grabbed four boards.

Connor Deal

Lynnville-Sully shot 51 percent from the floor, made 11-of-28 from 3 and buried 4-of-6 from the foul line. The Hawks grabbed 21 offensive rebounds, dished out 20 assists and swiped 25 steals.

Cameron Swarts led Moulton-Udell (4-16) with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and the Eagles shot only 26 percent from the floor.
