SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team overcame a tough shooting night with a fast start and a dominant effort on the glass during a 50-31 home win over BGM on Tuesday.
The Class 1A No. 11 Hawks led by six after one quarter and a 20-6 advantage in the second gave them a lead they wouldn’t give up. BGM won the second half 19-18.
“In the first half, we were good on both ends of the floor,” L-S head girls basketball coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We did a good job of moving the ball and getting some easy baskets. We didn’t have the same intensity and didn’t rebound the ball as well in the second half.”
The Hawks were led by two freshmen and a sophomore.
Ava Brummel posted an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double and added four assists and Breah Lowry chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Isabelle Vos registered a career-best 12 points and totaled seven rebounds and three steals.
Alaina Roberts collected six points, five rebounds and two steals, Kate Harthoorn added five rebounds and three steals and Tatum Huyser and Brooke Harthoorn each pulled down two boards.
The Hawks (15-5, 11-4 in the SICL) shot 30.6 percent from the floor and made only 1-of-15 from 3-point range. They were 11-of-20 from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 16 times but out-rebounded the Bears 45-32.
Ryanne VanDee led BGM (7-13, 2-13) with 15 points, nine rebounds and five steals. The Bears shot 25.6 percent from the floor, made 4-of-19 from 3 and turned the ball over 26 times.
North Mahaska 53, Lynnville-Sully 42
NEW SHARON — A slow start plagued the Hawks during a road loss to 2A No. 5 North Mahaska on Friday.
The Hawks were outscored by a single point in the final three frames but trailed by 10 after one and never fully recovered during a 53-42 defeat in SICL play.
“We did not start the game very well and dug ourselves too big a hole to overcome,” Hulsing said. “We didn’t execute our game plan well. We never got into a rhythm on defense or offense.”
Lynnville-Sully was plagued by 25 turnovers, and the Hawks missed eight free throws in the loss. They out-rebounded North Mahaska 28-24, shot 43.2 percent from the floor and made 5-of-8 from 3.
Vos led the Hawks with 11 points and three rebounds off the bench. She was 4-of-7 from the floor and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line.
Roberts contributed eight points, four rebounds and two assists, Lowry totaled seven points, four boards and two steals and Brummel chipped in four points and five rebounds.
Kate Harthoorn finished with three points, three rebounds and two assists, Brilynn Tice chipped in three points and three rebounds and Huyser put in four points. Brooke Harthoorn dished out two assists and swiped three steals off the bench.
Lynnville-Sully leads the series 23-18 since 2006, but North Mahaska has won 12 of the past 13 meetings.
The Hawks’ five losses this season have come against 2A No. 5 North Mahaska, 1A No. 6 Montezuma and 2A No. 1 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
Sydney Anderson led the Warhawks with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals and Breckyn Schilling added nine points and four assists.
North Mahaska (18-2, 14-1) won the game despite shooting only 38 percent from the floor. The Warhawks made 5-of-15 from 3 and connected on 10-of-17 from the foul line. They turned the ball over only 12 times.
