PELLA — Alex Garvis scored in double digits for the second time this season, but the Newton girls basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover during a 45-32 road loss to Class 4A No. 13 Pella on Friday during Little Hawkeye Conference action.
The Cardinals trailed by six after one quarter and were outscored 12-8 in the second and third. Newton won the fourth 12-11.
Pella improved to 35-3 against the Cardinals since 2006. It was the Lady Dutch’s 26th straight win in the series, but the 13-point margin was the smallest since falling 46-37 on Jan. 29, 2021.
The win snapped Pella’s four-game skid and extended Newton’s losing streak to five games.
Garvis put in a season-best 11 points and was 3-of-6 from 3-point range. She added four rebounds and two steals.
Tori White pitched in six points and five rebounds, Payton Carkhuff posted five points and six boards and Alex Riney grabbed six rebounds.
Addyson Cibula put in five points, Bella Winther swiped two steals and Brooke Garvis grabbed three rebounds.
The Cardinals (8-8, 2-7 in the conference) were plagued by 25 percent shooting. They made 4-of-13 from 3-point range, connected on 8-of-15 from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 28 times.
Kamryn Long led Pella with 11 points and Maggie Thompson grabbed eight rebounds.
The Lady Dutch (12-6, 5-3) shot 32 percent from the floor, made 5-of-25 from 3 and connected on 10-of-16 from the foul line. They turned the ball over 19 times.
