IOWA CITY — Lane Rozendaal finished 5-0 and three other Cardinals won four times during the Bean-Smith City Duals on Saturday.
The Newton wrestling team rallied to defeat Ottumwa 47-35 but fell in its other four duals during a weekend tournament hosted by Iowa City High School.
The Cardinals were edged, 38-37, by Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the seventh-place match. They also lost 40-30 to host Iowa City High and came up short in duals against Mount Vernon (53-26) and Clear Creek-Amana (56-26).
Newton wound up eighth in the 10-team field, finishing in front of Oskaloosa and Ottumwa.
Newton lost its first two duals of the day but got a come-from-behind victory over Ottumwa. The Cardinals were 7-6 in the contested matches but lost four of the first five to start the dual.
Newton registered six pins in the triumph over the Bulldogs. Those were registered by Kaiden Rogers (126), Aiden Robson (150), Rozendaal (157), Zach Sheffield (190), Nick Milburn (215) and Kent Montgomery (106).
Abel Aldama also won by 15-0 technical fall at 113 and Asher Rhoads accepted a forfeit at 165.
Class 2A No. 8 Mount Vernon was 9-5 in contested matches. Newton got pins from Milburn, Montgomery and Aldama, Rogers won 17-0 and Rozendaal scored an 8-5 win by decision.
The Cardinals lost the final five matches in their dual against Iowa City High. The Little Hawks were 8-5 in contested matches. Newton got pins from Robson, Rozendaal and Aldama and Rogers and Konner Jimenez both won by decision at 126 and 144, respectively.
Newton dropped the first five matches of its dual with CCA and finished 4-10 overall. Rozendaal, Rhoads and Milburn all won by fall and Class 3A No. 5 Montgomery scored a 7-3 win over 3A No. 11 Cole Kasparek.
Bonus points were the difference in the Cardinals’ narrow loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy. James Murphy (132) and Sheffield both accepted forfeits, but Newton was 5-7 in contested matches.
Kennedy posted five pins and one technical fall, while Newton produced two pins and two technical falls.
The contested pins for Newton came from Rozendaal and Rhoads and Rogers and Aldama both won by technical fall.
Montgomery lost his match to Kylan Walsh 9-6 in SV-1 at 106.
Rozendaal was 5-0 with four pins and Milburn, Montgomery and Aldama all finished 4-1. Milburn produced three pins, and Rogers, Robson and Rhoads all were 3-2.
One of Robson’s losses came against 2A No. 1 Mikey Ryan of Mount Vernon. Rhoads suffered a loss to 2A No. 9 Cooper Hird of Mount Vernon and Zaine Robson lost to 2A No. 1 Jace Jaspers of Mount Vernon and 3A No. 6 Nolan Howell of CCA.
Milburn’s only loss came to 3A No. 11 Raphael Etuma of Iowa City High.
Coleby Revell, Newton’s starter at 285, did not win a match but three of his losses came against state-ranked heavyweights.
