Newton wrestlers fall to conference rival DCG

Cardinals can’t solve Mustangs in LHC battles

GRIMES — Newton scored bonus points in all four of its contested wins, but the Cardinals fell to rival Dallas Center-Grimes during a Little Hawkeye Conference matchup on Thursday.

The Mustangs were 10-4 in contested matches during their 54-21 home victory. DCG got bonus points in all 10 wins.

Aiden Robson and Nick Milburn won by fall at 150 and 215 pounds, respectively, Class 3A No. 5 Kent Montgomery won 18-2 at 106 and Abel Aldama secured a 14-2 major decision win at 113.

The Mustangs won five times by fall, registered four technical fall victories and had one win by major decision.

DCG’s roster features four ranked wrestlers, including Ayden Beck, who was a 1A place winner for Baxter last season. Beck is currently ranked No. 8 in 3A at 132.

Dallas Center-Grimes 59, Newton 15

GRIMES — Stella Cupples won by fall, Kylee Adams scored a narrow 1-0 victory and Rosa Borja took a forfeit, but the Cardinals fell 59-15 to rival Dallas Center-Grimes on Thursday.

The Mustangs, who are ranked seventh in the latest 2A tournament rankings by IAwrestle, were 4-2 in contested matches but took six forfeits. There was one double forfeit.

DCG’s roster features six ranked wrestlers. Two of those grapplers took forfeits, but Naomi Cervantes (140), Kamiya Lepley (145), Heather Hanson (155) and Ashlyn Van Manen (190) all lost to ranked wrestlers.

Class 2A No. 10 Van Manen lost by fall to top-ranked Halley Beaudet at 190.

Class 2A No. 5 Adams won 1-0 over Nia Kiley at 105 and Cupples secured a win by fall at 115. Borja’s forfeit victory came at 110.
