SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team scored the game’s first 26 points and held Belle Plaine to single digits in all four quarters during a 56-10 home rout on Friday.
The Class 1A No. 10 Hawks led the South Iowa Cedar League contest 22-0 after one quarter, swiped 22 steals and claimed their third straight win over the Lady Plainsmen.
“Everybody got a chance to play and got on the floor,” Lynnville-Sully head girls basketball coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We did what we needed to do early to be successful tonight.”
The Hawks improved to 23-6 against Belle Plaine since 2006. No one scored in double figures but eight L-S players put in four or more.
Lynnville-Sully won the game despite shooting just 33 percent from the floor and 2-of-17 from 3-point range. The Hawks only turned it over 11 times, made 16-of-24 from the free-throw line and forced Belle Plaine into 34 turnovers.
“It’s a lot about us. We wanted to play the game the same way no matter who we are playing,” said Alaina Roberts, who is Lynnville-Sully’s lone senior. “We’ve had the same mental mindset all week. It was a game we were able to work on defending without our hands out and not reaching.”
Seven Hawks scored in the first quarter. Brilynn Tice scored four of her career-high nine points early in the game. All 22 points in the first quarter were either scored inside the lane or at the foul line.
Five of Ava Brummel’s seven points came in the first half. She opened the second with a bucket inside.
Belle Plaine got on the board with a free throw with 5:29 to play in the second. A three-point play from Tice made it 29-1 and then Brooke Harthoorn made a layup and converted her own three-point play to push the margin to 36-1.
Kate Harthoorn ended the half with two free throws and a layup, and the Hawks went into break with a 42-5 advantage.
“I thought our defense was pretty good as far as moving our feet,” Hulsing said. “We reached three or four more times than I would have liked. But we were active with ball pressure, rebounded and ran the floor well. We executed well offensively.”
The entire second half was played with a continuous clock as the margin reached 35 points. Roberts scored five of the team’s nine points in the third and Emma Parkinson highlighted the fourth with a 3-pointer. It was Parkinson’s first career varsity points.
“That was awesome,” Roberts said about the Parkinson 3. “It’s awesome to see the girls who work really hard in practice get a chance to show it on the floor.”
Breah Lowry led the Hawks (12-3, 8-2 in the SICL) with eight points, five rebounds, five assists and a career-high 10 steals. The Hawk freshman leads the team in steals per game at 3.7.

Isabelle Vos collected four points and a career-best nine rebounds off the bench, while Parkinson scored three points and Kenna Johnson grabbed two boards.
“It gives other kids a chance to get out there and showcase their talents,” Hulsing said. “You do what you have to do, play who’s on your schedule and make the best of it.
“Our standard is the same whether the starters are out there or we are down at the end of the roster. We have the same expectations.”
Lacie Rothman scored seven of Belle Plaine’s 10 points and Taylor Johnson grabbed nine rebounds. The Lady Plainsmen (1-14, 0-10) shot 11.5 percent from the floor and made 4-of-11 from the foul line.
