WASHINGTON — The Newton boys basketball team used a fast start and a dominant second quarter to down Washington on Tuesday.
The Cardinals were outscored by a pair in the second half but defeated the Demons, 64-49, during a non-conference road game.
It was the second straight win for Newton, which improved to 4-0 when scoring 60 or more points.
Four Cardinals scored in double figures in the win, and Newton made 52 percent of its shots from the floor while burying 11 3-pointers.
Newton led 18-12 after one quarter and outscored the Demons 16-5 in the second to pull away for good.
Caden Klein led the Cardinals (7-5) with 16 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals. He was 7-of-9 from the floor.
Landon Bozarth totaled 15 points, six rebounds and three assists, Cade Bauer tallied 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals and Isaiah Slaughter posted 11 points off the bench.
Bozarth was 3-of-4 from 3 and Bauer made 3-of-5 from deep. The Cardinals were 11-of-26 from long range and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. They turned the ball over nine times.
Creighton Andrew collected six points, three rebounds and two assists, Christian Ergenbright scored three points and Dawson Maki grabbed two rebounds off the bench.
It was the fifth straight loss for Washington, which fell to 5-8 on the season.
