The Newton girls basketball team had a three-possession lead after the first quarter of its non-conference game against Albia on Thursday.
But the Lady Demons rallied with a big second quarter and extended the margin in the final two frames during a 51-36 road win.
The Cardinals led 12-5 after one quarter but were outscored 16-6 in the second and 11-3 in the third.
The 51 points allowed were the fewest in a loss this season for Newton, which dropped to 8-5.
Albia (10-1) is 3-0 against the Cardinals since 2021. The Lady Demons’ only loss this year came against Class 2A No. 1 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
Tori White led Newton with 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals. She was 3-of-5 from the free-throw line.
Alex Garvis posted eight points, five boards and two steals, Alex Riney added five points and five rebounds and Hailey Dickerson chipped in six points and three rebounds.
Sophia Coady put in six points and pulled down two boards, Payton Carkhuff had seven rebounds and three assists, Addyson Cibula posted three boards and Camryn Klein collected two rebounds.
The Cardinals shot 31.7 percent from the floor, made 4-of-18 from 3-point range and connected on 6-of-10 from the foul line. They turned the ball over 35 times.
