CENTERVILLE — Kent Montgomery piled up six wins and a bracket championship, Lane Rozendaal and Aiden Robson both finished second at their weights and the short-handed Newton boys wrestling team placed fifth in the Mike Halupnick Big Red Invite on Saturday.
The Cardinals were missing seven starters but still scored 251.5 points in first, while Lynnville-Sully entered seven total wrestlers in the tournament and placed eighth in the 15-team field.
Columbus/WMU won the tournament with 341 points, while the rest of the top five featured Wayne Community (318.5), Oskaloosa (313.5), Kirksville (Mo.) (295.5) and Newton (251.5).
Davis County (249.5), Montezuma (234), Lynnville-Sully (217.5), host Centerville (204) and Moravia (172) completed the top 10.
The Hawks had the fewest wrestlers in the top 10, while the Cardinals were missing half of their lineup but still registered four top-five individual finishes.
Montgomery (26-1) won the 106-pound bracket after going 6-0 with five pins. Three of those came in the first period and he defeated Kirksville’s Jason Schutter 19-13 in the finals.
Aiden Robson (22-11) and Lane Rozendaal (18-6) both finished second after 5-1 days. Robson posted five pins at 150, while Rozendaal had four pins at 157.
The next best finisher for Newton was Nick Milburn, who took fourth at 215. Milburn (16-11) was 3-2 for the day with two first-period pins. His two losses came to Class 2A No. 7 Mason Naly of Clarinda and 2A No. 10 Dre Smithburg of Fairfield.
Lynnville-Sully’s Jett Kramer was second at 113, while Kimball Elliott (126), Matthew Mintle (132), Wyatt Mathis (165) and Ben Squires (285) all were third at their weights.
Kramer (23-4) was 3-1 with two pins and one technical fall. His loss came against Kirksville’s Jaden Crisp.
Elliott (19-2) was 4-1 with four pins and he lost to Oskaloosa’s Ty Lorentzen. Mintle (24-4) finished 3-1 with three pins and his loss came against 1A No. 5 Max Pollock of Wayne.
Mathis finished 4-2 with four pins and three first-period falls and Squires (17-8) was 3-2 with three pins. One of Squires’ losses came against 2A No. 11 Regan Roberts of Knoxville.
Newton entered 11 wrestlers total. Abel Aldama (12-10) was seventh at 113, Zach Sheffield took seventh at 190, Chevy Langston finished eighth at 175 and Michael Perez (285) and James Murphy (132) were ninth at their weights.
Sebastian Sorenson (138) and Zaine Robson (144) both placed 11th at their weights.
Aldama was 3-2 with two pins and one technical fall, Sheffield finished 2-3 with two first-period pins and Langston, Perez and Zaine Robson all claimed one victory.
Lynnville-Sully’s other two wrestlers were Burt Johnson and Chase Deal. Johnson (16-13) finished sixth and was 1-3 with one pin at 138 and Deal took 12th at 190.
