PELLA — A trio of Cardinals won three times to lead the Newton girls wrestling team to a 2-1 night on Tuesday.
The Cardinals were without a handful of starters but still found a way to defeat English Valleys and Norwalk. The short-handed roster was too much to overcome in a 46-28 loss to Pella though.
Newton was 3-1 in contested matches in its 48-9 win over English Valleys, and the Cardinals took three forfeits in a 30-25 win over the Warriors.
In the dual against the Bears, Newton got three straight wins by pin from Jeralys Casanova, Johana Cerna and London Everhard at 130, 135 and 140 pounds, respectively.
The Cardinals took five forfeits and they were accepted by Rosa Borja (110), Stella Cupples (115), Peyton Hoen (145), Kamiya Lepley (155) and Ashlyn Van Manen (190).
Newton was 2-4 in contested matches against Norwalk, but had a 3-1 surplus in forfeits. Cupples and Cerna both won by fall, while Everhard, Lepley and Van Manen all accepted forfeits.
The Cardinals edged Pella in their Senior Night dual earlier this season, but couldn’t grab another victory on Tuesday without starters Kylee Adams (105), Julianna Maldonado-Hidalgo (120), Alivia Conley (125) and Ella Machin (170), who missed the meet due to illness or injury.
Newton was 3-4 in contested matches against the Lady Dutch and had a 4-2 disadvantage in forfeits.
Cupples won her match by fall in 54 seconds at 115 and Van Manen also won by pin at 190. Casanova scored a 20-6 major decision at 130 and Cerna and Grace Guy both took forfeits at 135 and 170, respectively.
Cupples and Cerna both were 3-0 with two pins, Van Manen was 3-0 with two forfeits and Casanova, Everhard and Lepley all were 2-1.
