Class 4A No. 7 Norwalk too much for Newton girls

Cardinals can’t overcome slow start against Warriors

The Newton girls basketball team fell behind against Class 4A No. 7 Norwalk and never recovered during a 71-24 home loss on Tuesday.

The Warriors led 21-6 after one quarter and held the Cardinals to single digits in three of the four quarters during Little Hawkeye Conference action.

The loss snapped Newton’s four-game win streak, and it was Norwalk’s 17th straight win over the Cardinals.

Tori White led Newton with five points and six rebounds. Alex Riney added six points and two boards and Hailey Dickerson chipped in four points and four rebounds.

Evie Main scored four points and Addyson Cibula grabbed two boards off the bench.

The Cardinals shot 29.6 percent from the floor, made 1-of-6 from 3-point range and connected on 7-of-14 from the free-throw line. Newton (8-4, 2-4 in the conference) turned the ball over 30 times.

Braylyn Birmingham led the Warriors (11-1, 4-1) with 26 points, four rebounds, three assists and five steals and Bailey Birmingham chipped in 24 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Norwalk made 18-of-23 from the foul line and committed only nine turnovers.
