Newton girls drop pair of duals at road triangular

Cardinals fall to host Ames, state-ranked Mason CIty

AMES — Class 2A No. 8 Mason City and Ames were too much for the Newton girls wrestling team on Thursday.

The Riverhawks and Little Cyclones allowed 19 points to the Cardinals in their duals, but Mason City went home with a 59-19 victory and Ames claimed a 56-19 win at home.

The Cardinals were 4-8 in contested matches against Ames and the hosts took two forfeits.

Newton got wins by pin from Class 2A No. 10 Ashlyn Van Manen at 190 pounds and Stella Cupples (20-6) at 115. Class 2A No. 2 Kylee Adams also won 14-6 at 105 and Grace Guy scored a 4-3 win at 170.

The Cardinals were 2-8 in contested matches against state-ranked Mason City and both teams took two forfeits.

Guy and Van Manen (17-6) both took forfeits at 170 and 190, respectively, while Jeralys Casanova won 14-11 at 130 and Kamiya Lepley (15-9) scored a 15-7 win at 155.

Adams (16-2) suffered her first loss at 105. She fell 3-1 to 2A No. 8 Lila Sheehan of Mason City.

The Riverhawks’ roster features eight ranked wrestlers. Cupples’ loss came against 2A No. 10 Madeline Cornish.

Newton’s Johana Cerna lost twice to ranked opponents, too.
