Tough shooting night plagues Newton boys in loss to Oskaloosa

Indians shoot 56 percent from the floor, win the battle on the boards

The Newton boys basketball team forced Oskaloosa into 22 turnovers, but the Indians won the battle on the boards and shot 56 percent from the floor during a 55-45 road win on Friday night.

The Cardinals lost the Little Hawkeye Conference contest by 10 after missing eight free throws and shooting only 29 percent from the floor.

It was the second straight win in the series for Oskaloosa, which is 18-17 against Newton since 2007.

Caden Klein led the Cardinals with eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Landon Bozarth scored a team-best 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range, Dawson Maki had nine points and three rebounds and Cade Bauer chipped in six points, three rebounds and two steals.

Isaiah Slaughter led the reserves with six points and three boards and Christian Ergenbright grabbed three rebounds off the bench.

Newton (5-4, 2-3 in the LHC) made just 5-of-21 from 3 and was 6-of-14 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals committed only 10 turnovers.

Oskaloosa got 24 points and five assists from Heavon Knox, who was 4-of-6 from 3. Xavier Edwards added 13 points and nine boards and Tommy North chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

Knox, Edwards and North combined to score 48 of the Indians’ 55 points. Oskaloosa (4-5, 1-4) was 4-of-9 from 3, 5-of-11 from the foul line and turned the ball over 22 times.
