OTTUMWA — Kent Montgomery and Nick Milburn finished second and eight Cardinals were in the top 10 of their weight classes during the Ottumwa Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Newton boys wrestling team entered 11 grapplers in the two-day tournament, and the Cardinals finished in the upper half of the 24-team field.
Newton scored 285.5 points in 12th. North Scott won the tournament with 683.5 points and the rest of the top five included Cedar Rapids Prairie (530), Iowa City West (502.5), Kirksville (Mo.) (419) and host Ottumwa (367.
Creston/Orient-Macksburg (362.5), Fairfield (362.5), Iowa City Liberty (325.5), Wayne of Corydon (307.5) and Tipton (305.5) finalized the top 10.
Montgomery suffered his first loss of the season at 106 pounds, but his 5-1 weekend resulted in a runner-up finish. The Class 3A No. 4 Montgomery (20-1) posted three pins, one technical fall victory and an 18-14 decision. His loss came against Burlington’s Braxton Hutchinson, who is ranked third in 3A at 113.
Milburn (13-9) was the runner-up at 215. He was 4-2 for the weekend with one pin and three wins by decision.
Montgomery, Milburn, Lane Rozendaal, Aiden Robson and Coleby Revell all went undefeated on Friday.
Revell (9-6) was sixth at 285 after a 3-3 weekend. His first win was a pin in eight seconds and he also won 4-3 and 12-7. One of his losses came against 3A No. 11 Romeo Klein of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Rozendaal placed seventh at 157. He was 4-3 for the weekend and one of his losses was against 3A No. 10 Cole Green of North Scott. Rozendaal (13-5) posted three first-period pins and one win by decision.
Robson (17-10) took eighth at 150. He was 4-0 on Friday and 0-4 on Saturday but posted two pins and two technical falls for the tournament. One of Robson’s losses came against 3A No. 3 Justin Avila of Iowa City West.
Abel Aldama finished ninth at 113 after a 4-2 weekend. He was 4-0 on Saturday after losing both of his matches on Day 1. His tournament included two pins, one technical fall and one win by decision and one of his losses came against 3A No. 4 Dylan Munson of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Zander Robson and Sebastian Sorenson placed 10th at their respective weights. Zander Robson was 3-4 with two pins and one technical fall at 132 and Sorenson finished with two pins and one win by decision at 138.
One of Zander Robson’s losses came against 2A No. 5 Lane Travis of Creston.
J’Kwon Williamson was 2-4 for the weekend and placed 12th at 120, while Kaiden Rogers won three times at 126 but placed 15th. Two of Rogers’ wins came by pin.
