CLARKE — Stella Cupples won all four of her matches and posted three pins, Ashlyn Van Manen had three pins of her own and the Newton girls wrestling team finished 3-1 in a road quintuple on Tuesday.
The Cardinals dominated host Clarke (58-12) and Knoxville (57-18), edged West Central Valley (36-27) and lost to Carlisle (61-15) in their four duals.
Newton was 5-0 in contested matches against Clarke and had a 5-2 advantage in forfeits. The Cardinals got pins from Cupples, Kamiya Lepley, Grace Guy and Van Manen and Rosa Borja, Julianna Maldonado-Hidalgo, Alivia Conley, Jeralys Casanova and Johana Cerna all accepted forfeits. Peyton Hoen also won 13-5 at 145 pounds.
Against Knoxville, Newton was 8-0 in contested matches and Cupples and Maldonado-Hidalgo both took forfeits. Borja won 4-0 at 110 and Conley, Casanova, Cerna, Hoen, Lepley, Guy and Van Manen all won by fall.
The Cardinals and West Central Valley each won four of the eight contested matches in their dual. Newton was 2-1 in forfeits and all four contested wins were pins.
Hoen and Lepley took the forfeits and Cupples, Maldonado-Hidalgo, Conley and Van Manen all posted wins by pin.
Newton was 3-7 in contested matches against Carlisle and had a 4-0 disadvantage in forfeits. Cupples and Casanova won by fall and Cerna scored a 21-19 win by decision.
Cupples (19-4) was 4-0 with three pins, Van Manen (16-6) finished 3-1 with three pins and Conley, Lepley and Casanova were 3-1 with two pins. Maldonado-Hidalgo (11-6), Cerna (11-6) and Hoen each were 3-1, while Borja and Guy were 2-2.
The Cardinals did not have the services of Kylee Adams or Ella Machin due to illness. Adams (15-1) is currently ranked second in Class 2A at 105.
